I. Syllabus

Abstract

How do we encourage young learners to use the English they learn in a meaningful context?  Children can have access to various online creation and publication tools to share stories. Participants will explore various applications that motivate learners to share their stories through comic creation tools, online tools, mobile devices, and more.

 

Weekly Outline


By the end of this workshop, participants will have

  • created digital stories using different web tools
  • explored different ways in which digital storytelling can be integrated into teaching YLs
  • connected with other YL educators worldwide
  • had hands-on experience using digital/online/mobile tools to motivate their YLs to create and publish stories
  • developed materials, guidelines, and checklists to help their YLs craft and publish their digital stories
  • learned about Creative Commons Licensing and sites to access music and images for digital stories
  • experienced the process of creating and publishing digital stories which includes storyboarding
  • evaluated various publishing formats for digital storytelling including comics, videos, and interactive formats
  • discovered how to motivate YLs to improve their speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills through digital storytelling
  • collected a library of free websites, tools, and resources to use in their YL classes
  • engaged in discussions about the best ways to integrate technology effectively into the YL curriculum
  • participated in various archived webinars with YL authors and experts

 

 

Week 1 Introductions & Simple Online Digital Tools & the Basics

Tools Explained- Posterous, Edmodo

During the first week of the course, participants will

  • become familiar with the group tools and forums
  • introduce themselves and begin to establish connections with each other
  • discuss the use of digital storytelling in class
  • learn to create and define a copyright for their creative works
  • learn about online safety and privacy concerns when working with young learners
  • discover new tools they can experiment with throughout the sessions in an online playground
  • set-up profiles in the Posterous Group
  • join and participate in the Wiki and DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group


Tasks at a glance:

  • Task 1, Day 1: Join the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group. Be familiar with but do not join the Posterous and Wiki. Set-up a profile in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group.
  • Task 2, Days 1-5: 3,2,1 Introduction. Introduce yourself and get to know others by leaving comments.
  • Task 3, Days 3-4: Answer a Survey
  • Task 4, Days 1-4: Play in the Sandbox
  • Task 5, Day 6: Attend our Webinar



Week 2 Sharing Stories through Comics

During this week, participants will

  • become familiar with web tools to create comics with young learners.
  • learn how to create comic stories with these tools.
  • reflect on the use of comics in the classroom
  • explore ways to integrate comics in their classroom in ways that improve reading and writing skills of learners
  • discover mobile apps for creating comics
  • create a comic using one of the tools from this week

  • Task 1, Day 1: Read Janet Bianchini's Scoop.It, view her slideshow presentation, discuss in the Edmodo group
  • Task 2, Day 2: Exploring 2 examples of how teachers have integrated comics into their lessons then discuss in the Edmodo group
  • Task 3, Days 1-3: Play in the Sandbox and choose 1 comic generator tool to create a comic.
  • Task 4, Days 3-4: Create a comic using 1 of the comic generator tools or apps.

Week 3  Video Stories with Young Learners

During this week, participants will

  • become familiar with web tools to create video stories with YL.
  • learn how to create video stories with animation tools.
  • learn how to produce video stories including pictures, audio, music, transitions, subtitles, effects and animations.
  • explore ways to integrate video stories in lessons that boost writing and speaking skills of the learners.
  • discover mobile apps for creating video stories
  • create a personal narrative or a documentary video story choosing one of the tools.

  • Task 1, Day 1: Post how you use videos in your classroom and discuss in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group
  • Task 2, Day 2: Create an account with Animoto or Photopeach and discuss in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group
  • Task 3, Day 3: Create an account for GoAnimate and discuss in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group
  • Task 4, Days 3-4: Watch an example of digital storytelling videos in the classroom, try MailVu, and discuss the pros and cons of using videos in the classroom in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group
  • Task 5, Day 5: Play in the Sandbox with other video creation tools, create a video and post the video to the Posterous group.

Week 4  Collaborative Digital Stories

During this week participants will:

  • be introduced to collaborative web 2.0 tools that can be used for story-telling
  • discover mobile apps for creating collaborative stories
  • learn how to use a variety of collaborative tools for both writing stories and narrating stories with audio
  • look at ways such tools can be used to enhance regular lessons
  • discover forums for connecting with YL teachers worldwide to create collaborative stories
  • participate in and contribute to the development of different stories using the tools demonstrated
  • share and discuss their own ideas for developing stories digitally
  • consider the teacher’s role in a collaborative story and how it should be guided and/or moderated

  • Task 1, Days 1-3: What are collaborative digital stories? View examples and post reflections in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group
  • Task 2, Days 2-5: Sign-up for Voicethread and post reflections in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group
  • Task 3, Day 3: Discuss the pros and cons of using a wiki for collaborative written stories in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group
  • Task 4, Days 3-5: Create your own collaborative story with other participants and post the story to the Posterous group!
  • Task 5, Days 4-6: Showcase your work by attending our webinar.

  • complete an online evaluation about their experience taking this course


Tasks at a glance:

  • Task 1, Days 1-2: In the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group please share with us your reflections of the course.
  • Task 2, Days 1-3: Pick a Sandbox Tool and Create a Story, post a reflection of your experience in the DigiKids EVO Edmodo Group and upload your story to the Posterous group.
  • Task 3, Days 3-4: Evaluate the EVO session by filling out our survey
  • Task 4, Days 6: Attend our Webinar
